Michael McMahon
Michael McMahon, hairdresser by day, artist by night, celebrates his love of Life through his natural, unbridled artistic talents. There is a universal appeal in the simplicity of his linear black and white drawings that evokes a powerful response in the viewer.
Michael was born in North London, England, and at the early age of six years started “exploring” his artistic “gift” through sketching caricatures of real people. Graphite has been the most comfortable and satisfying medium that he prefers to use to produce his macroscopic view of Life. The quietness of non-colour enhances the angles, highlights, and shading of an aged brow, creases and folds over a bent knee, hands in activity, or cradled arms.
“Through my drawings I hope to evoke a visceral response relying on the senses”. Michael relies on hisĀ natural ability as an artist, having received no formal tuition, to capture Life as he sees it – intimately.
His first art exhibition in Burlington in 1978 was sold out. Since then his part-time career as an artist has grown steadily with numerous exhibitions in galleries in the Burlington and Hamilton are. He had the honour of having his pencil portraiture’s chosen for the Hamilton Gallery of Distinction in 1986 and 1987. He is now challenging himself with new ideas and new directions in the Peterborough area.
